The Kopjafa:

Craft and Tradition

Hungary has a rich history of craftsmanship and, as such, the country’s artisanal heritage is a constant source of inspiration to Sandra Sandor. As a Budapest-based fashion house, Nanushka is defined by innovative craft and new heritage, with an experimental spirit that intuitively juxtaposes traditional techniques with contemporary silhouettes.

Nanushka first incorporated the kopjafa totem in an early lookbook, which was shot at the Hungarian Open Air Museum, dedicated to Hungarian folk culture and architecture. The individuality of kopjafa is two-fold; a unique summary of a person’s life as well as the skilled handiwork of a craftsman. The vocabulary of Hungarian folk art, kopjafa symbols use visual language to tell a distinct story, with the human touch visible on every symbol.

The historic and cultural significance of kopjafa is enduring: our Spring/Summer 2022 collection introduced the ‘totem print’; our very own kopjafa-inspired symbols. These modern emblems were born from Sandra Sandor’s visual designs, as a personal story that aims to preserve tradition through reinvention. With a design approach inspired by new heritage, Nanushka also presents beautifully crafted garments inspired by traditional craft techniques and expertly finished by local artisans.

Nanushka collections are a holistic embodiment of artisanal luxury, with functional craft elements finished by local experts to present beautifully crafted garments. Working with Hungarian folk art creates an emotional bond between myself and the product, which results in a design process that feels both ceremonial and organic.
