FALL/WINTER 2023

Shape shifting

A collection captured in motion. A perspective, shifting and re-shaping.

Curious and assertive, Fall/Winter 2023, titled Shape Shifting, rediscovers the body and how a garment interacts with it. Embraced imperfections, inherent modularity and the softening, cinching and distortion of fabric create evolution and fluidity of silhouette and fabrication.

From draping to ruching and cropping and lengthening, Fall/Winter2023’s intent is to highlight different forms across ready-to-wear. Nanushka plays with traditional menswear tailoring and conventional layering, and explores the traditional female form; highlighting new perspectives and emphasizing new proportions.

Shape Shifting changes the perception of what a garment can be, by presenting modular, multifunctional outfits. Complete and considered looks are made up of smaller, deconstructed pieces; mini dresses elongated with skirts, cropped jackets and kilts that transform into a coat. Worn in a multitude of ways, Nanushka’s modular design approach is a technical expression of this season’s conceptual shift.

“Fall/Winter 2023 re-evaluates beauty and form; what shapes our perception and how we shape these perceptions ourselves. Emphasizing areas of the body that are typically hidden or restructured, we have created a collection that subverts and reshapes conventional silhouettes; the female form is explored and highlighted through detailing and drape, shoulders are softened in male tailoring and a garment's functional modularity becomes inherently conceptual.

Inspired by artists Constantin Brâncuși’s and Bill Brandt’s interpretation of spatial relationships between their work and viewers, Shape Shifting places a focus on the connectivity between the individual and the garments. We have explored the subjectivity of perception, recognizing that beauty is in the eye of the holder, not the beholder. The garments invite individuals to define and experience their own beauty in their own way.”

A nomadic flair is interwoven throughout the collection, with a new smocked gauze fabrication and Aran knit motifs serving as testament to the value Nanushka places on folk influences. As with previous seasons, Fall/Winter 2023 continues to skilfully express new heritage as a core design theme through the modernization of the ornate, totemic kopjafa symbol. Like the kopjafa,Nanushka creatively instills cultural reference points throughout Shape Shifting by utilizing layering, distortion and innate function.
