Nanushka Meets
Chelo
Munich-based creative Chelo moves fluidly between music, fashion and community, creating experiences that feel both intimate and far-reaching. As a DJ, designer and founder of THATBOII, he has built a practice rooted in connection – whether through his globally shared sundaiitape live sessions or the thoughtfully curated spaces that bring people together.
In this edition of Nanushka Meets, Chelo reflects on the creative intuition that guides his work, the relationship between music and personal expression, and the cultural influences that continue to shape his evolving perspective.
1. HOW HAS CREATING MUSIC (ESPECIALLY MIXING) SHAPED YOUR SENSE OF CREATIVITY AND FREEDOM? HAS IT CHANGED HOW YOU SEE THE WORLD OR YOURSELF?
Definitely. DJing taught me that creativity isn't about adding more, it's about knowing what to leave out - the same goes for mixing. It's all about timing, patience and trusting your instinct. Over the years, music has completely changed the way I experience places, people and even how I feel comfortable in silence. I think I notice details now that I would've missed before.
2. DO YOU BELIEVE MUSIC CAN HEAL? IN WHAT WAYS HAS MUSIC MOVED BEYOND JUST ART OR ENTERTAINMENT IN YOUR LIFE?
Absolutely. Music has always been much more than entertainment for me. Some songs bring me back to moments I forgot I had, others help me process things I can't really put into words. It's become a way to connect with people without having to explain yourself. That's probably why I love listening sessions so much. Watching people experience music together reminds me how powerful it can be.
3. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE AND WHICH CULTURAL INTERSECTION INFLUENCES YOU THE MOST?
I'd say my style is pretty minimal, but intentional. I like timeless pieces more than trends. Most of my inspiration comes from the connection between music, architecture and design. Growing up between different cultures also shaped how I see things, I naturally mix influences instead of trying to fit into one scene.
4. ARE THERE ANY ARTISTS AND DESIGNERS THAT HAVE HAD A LASTING INFLUENCE ON THE WAY YOU EXPRESS YOURSELF CREATIVELY?
Pharrell is definitely one of them. Not because of one specific project, but because of the way he moves between music, fashion and design without forcing it. Virgil Abloh had a huge impact as well. He showed that ideas don't have to stay in one category. On the music side, producers like J Dilla, Kaytranada and the whole Soulection movement have influenced the way I think about rhythm, emotion and storytelling.
5. MUSIC AND FASHION OFTEN INSPIRE EACH OTHER. HOW DOES THE MUSIC YOU'RE LISTENING TO AFFECT THE WAY YOU DRESS, AND VICE VERSA?
They definitely influence each other, but in a subtle way. When I'm listening to soulful records, I usually feel drawn to simpler, more relaxed fits. When I'm playing high-energy sets, I naturally dress a bit differently. I don't try to match outfits to music, but both come from the same mood.
6. IF YOU COULD CHOOSE YOUR TOP 5 SONGS TO LISTEN TO FOREVER, WHAT WOULD THEY BE?
That's almost impossible, but today I'd say:
- Sade – Kiss of Life
- D'Angelo – Lady
- J Dilla – So Far To Go
- N.E.R.D. – Sooner or later
- Marvin Gaye - What's going on
Ask me again next month and the list will probably change…
